Reviews
La Gioconda features some of the greatest arias including Cielo e mar performed beautifully by Hugh Smith with his gorgeous big voice. Gioconda's Suicidio became a radiant solo in Michèle Crider's singing. I also loved the performance of Tea Demurishvili as Gioconda's blind mother. Immediately as bass Paata Burchuladze began to sing there was electricity in the air. His warm and sounding bass was one of the impressive moments of the evening. Laura Brioli sang charmingly and Barnaba was performed by the excellent Jonathan Summers who became superb towards the end. ("Ora Binur, Maariv")
The singers in this production are most impressive: the deep and regal bass of Paata Burchuladze is very well known here and his acting is as commanding. Most impressive was Jonathan Summers as the evil Barnaba. Summers has a combination of a voice with an interesting color, which he uses in a most intelligent way, and most expressive acting that always reaches the audience. Michèle Crider projected beautiful singing as Gioconda. Laura Biroli with her strong voice integrated well with the other members of the cast. Hugh Smith's enormous tenor helped a lot to the production and his acting was most convincing as well. (Hagai Hitron, "Haaretz")
I will always cherish the exciting singing of Michèle Crider in the final act. Jonathan Summers as Barnaba was most impressive. Paata Burchuladze was amazing as usual and Laura Brioli was impressive as well. But this was Michele Crider's evening with her beautiful singing, emotional power, foolproof vocal control and very good acting. ("Zvi Goren, Habamah")
“A beautiful production…very effective direction of Jean Louis Grinda …” (Classica Repertoire)
