Aviya Kopelman is one of the leading composers in Israel nowadays, having a distinct personal voice. She was born in Moscow and raised mainly in Jerusalem. As the composer-in-residence of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, promoting Israeli new art music and bringing it to a wider audience is one of her main goals. Kopelman graduated from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and holds a second degree summa cum laude from Bar-Ilan University, where she is currently a PhD student with a Presidential Scholarship. Before turning 30, Kopelman won the Israel Prime Minister Prize for Composition, and the Kronos: Under 30 Project competition, where she was chosen to write a commissioned work out of more the 300 applicants from around the world for the acclaimed Kronos Quartet. The piece was recorded for an album by quartet. Kopelman's music is performed around the globe. She was commissioned to write by the Carnegie Hall, New York (Young Artists program), the Kronos Quartet, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, the Israel Festival, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Camerata Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra, the Voice of Music Festival, the Jerusalem Trio, the Israeli Chamber Project, Carmel Quartet, Conjunto Iberico Celli Octet (Spain/Holland), Musica Nova, and more. Apart from composing, Kopelman sees a great importance in educating a new generation of composers in Israel. She was senior lecturer in the Rimon School of Music for eight years, and in the Hed College of Music prior to that; she is lecturing in all the main music institutions in Israel, as well as teaching at her home.
